Differences between panic bar, crash bar, emergency exit, fire door, and other terms
One of the most confusing things for business owners trying to be code-compliant is the sheer number of names for exit hardware. In general, terms like crash bar, cross bar, panic bar, and emergency exit device are all interchangeable.
But, where things do get more specific is when you’re talking about fire doors. Exits that require a fire door must follow very specific guidelines for fire-proof hardware, so you’ll need to play close attention to exit devices that come with a “fire-rated” label.
Now, let’s talk about the basics of emergency exit devices!
Rim Exit Devices
Rim devices are some of the most widely used emergency exit hardware on the market. They feature a latch mechanism that can be released by pressing on the crash bar mounted on the door. Of the emergency exit devices we’ll discuss in this article, they are generally the easiest to install.

Vertical Rod Exit Devices
A vertical rod exit device is used on doors which either have multiple latching points, namely on the top and the bottom of the door frame, or an overhead latch. Vertical rod devices are more commonly used on double doors without a mullion or in areas that could benefit from added security.

Mortise Exit Devices
You might know about mortise locks for other applications, as it’s one of the best styles of lock for commercial settings. If you’re new to these types of locks, mortise refers to any lock that is housed within the door for added durability and security. As such, on the surface, it may look similar to a standard rim device, but its locking mechanism is hidden in the pocket of the door.
You can find mortise exit devices in the Detex 30 series, with options for deadbolts, latch bolts and double cylinder locking.
Other considerations
So far, we’ve covered the basic design styles of emergency exit devices. But, there are a few additional considerations to keep in mind when choosing the right one for your setting.
Dogging
Dogging refers to the ability to keep the latch retracted in order to push or pull the door open freely. This can be useful in high traffic areas or during special events when large groups of people will be entering or exiting the space.
However, dogging is regulated on certain emergency exit devices, such as fire exits. This is because the device needs to be latched securely in the event of a fire in order to prevent spread.
Fire-door devices

Weather-proofing
For internal doors, you won’t need to worry about weather-proofing. Electrified versus non-electrified
Electrified exit devices give you more control over an exit, either by routing it to a security control room or connecting it to an alarm system. An example of this would be an electrified exit device on a fire door that triggers an alarm and sprinkler system when engaged.
